A pigeon infestation is most likely to occur in a commercial area however, they can infest any dwelling and cause significant damage. Pigeon infestations in Alberta pose a serious health risk to nearby humans due to the spores in their droppings which can lead to diseases like histoplasmosis.
Pigeons are stout-bodied birds with short necks and short, slender bills with fleshy ceres. They feed on seeds, fruits and plants. Pigeons build relatively flimsy nests – often using sticks and other debris – which may be placed in trees, on ledges, or on the ground, depending on the species. They lay one or two eggs at a time, and both parents care for the young, which leave the nest after 7 to 28 days.
