Wasps and hornets are a common summer pest in Alberta. They will build their nests in dry sheltered sites around your home. They are a nuisance around food and can become a safety hazard for pets and children, becoming a larger pest problem.
These pests are usually avoided due to their stingers and propensity to use them on humans. Wasps become more aggressive in the late summer months when foraging for food & can sting multiple times, especially if they have a large colony.
Wasps become an especially problematic pest when they build nests in or around your home. They will seek out dry, hidden locations such as underneath floorboards, inside walls, or tucked into corners of eavestroughing.

Tips to Prevent a Wasp Infestation
Locate possible entry points and seal them off. Keep screens for doors and windows in good repair.
Outdoor garbage can attract wasps, keep garbage in a sealed container with a tight-fitting lid.
Cover and/or remove food leftovers & waste to reduce wasp encounters.
Destroy abandoned animal burrows (e.g. gopher holes) before gound nesting wasps inhabit them.
When to Hire a Professional Wasp Exterminator
Due to the complex nature of their colonies and the ability to seriously harm humans, wasp nests should only be removed by trained, certified, and experienced pest control experts like the team at Assassin Pest Solution. This is especially true for large and/or hidden nests of wasps.
To remove wasps by applying your own wasp pest control measures, the following tips can be effective within a household or commercial setting:
- Wear protective clothing, headgear, and eye wear to avoid stings. Use tape to seal off sleeve cuffs.
- Attempt control measures on a cool evening as the colony will be more settled at night. This is especially important with wasps, who will become extremely aggressive once disturbed.
- Work with at least one other person to ensure safety & support.
- Ensure you are familiar with all the safety precautions and protocols required before applying any insecticides or chemical treatments.
